Vitiligo appears as discolored patches of skin. Although the exact cause of vitiligo is unknown, it’s likely an autoimmune disorder with a genetic propensity. Your body automatically attacks melanocytes, the skin cell responsible for producing pigment and protecting your skin from harmful UV rays. As a relatively common skin condition, vitiligo occurs most often in darker skinned people and in areas most often exposed to the sun, such as the neck, arms, skin, face, legs, and feet. It can, however, affect any area of the skin.
Our Solution
We use topical steroids for our treatment, such as Calcineurin Inhibitors which suppress the immune system. We also use narrow-band UVB, a form of phototherapy that restores the skin’s appearance. Makeup and spray tans provide camouflage for the disease as well.
XTRAC Excimer Laser
PhotoMedex developed the XTRAC® Excimer Laser to offer new hope to patients experiencing psoriasis, vitiligo, and other skin conditions. The XTRAC Laser focuses an intense beam of light on the targeted area without damaging the surrounding healthy areas. The XTRAC Laser effectively and rapidly clears the results of psoriasis, with few of the drawbacks that are common to most psoriasis treatments. A typical treatment takes just a few minutes as opposed to hours. You won’t have to apply topical creams on a daily basis or take oral medication either. Your healthy skin won’t be exposed to UV rays, so you won’t experience thinning skin or stretch marks.
